#4 - I keep procrastinating things

How do you feel when you have spent a whole day running away from what you really had to do? Procrastination might seem like a practical problem, but it can have serious consequences: perhaps you feel frustrated because your work is not finished. A little voice inside of you tells you that you have not been disciplined and effective. You are slacking. And you've wasted hours of your life doing nothing, and it wasn't even fun.

Everybody procrastinates from time to time, but for some of my clients it’s a serious problem. How do we approach that in coaching?

First of all there are a lot of practical tricks.

How do you eat an elephant? Bite by bite! Divide your work into small steps, do one at a time and put a check mark next to each step that you complete. That helps.

You can also divide your time into small chunks. Work for 25 minutes and then take a five-minute break. This method is known as the Pomodoro method and there are apps for it.

Follow your natural rhythm. Do difficult jobs when your head is clear and save easy administrative work for when your energy level is low. Do you feel naturally energetic in the morning? Then use that energy wisely.

But like always - it’s most important to look into your soul. Be a detective and find out what is going on. What makes you run away from your work? Why is it so hard or unattractive? Then do something with your conclusions. Try to replace unhelpful thought with more effective ones. Don’t ignore your thoughts and feelings - they’ll just start shouting harder, like anyone who is being ignored.

And you know what is most important? Don’t be so hard on yourself. Procrastination is normal, everybody runs away from their work sometimes. Being hard on yourself won’t make you work harder, it will just make you feel miserable and insecure. It’s OK.

All these strategies are very effective, but just reading them in a social post won’t help you solve your problem. Coaching does. Coaching can and will be life changing. Why not have a look around at my homepage and book a free coaching consultation?
